Question:

How can I add features from one Premier Political, Contour or Terrain map to another Premier Political, Contour or Terrain map? For example, how can add the county boundaries for Ohio to my Ohio terrain map?

Answer:

Premier political, contour and terrain maps will all open in the same position. This means you can easily move the vector feature layers between political, contour and terrain maps using Adobe Illustrator's "Paste in Front" command.

The Paste in Front command retains the separate layering for the feature you move, provided you have the "Paste Remembers Layers" option selected. If a layer of the same name already exists in your document, the feature will be pasted into that layer.

Note: The maps must be in their original position and scale upon opening to use the Paste in Front command properly.

  • First, you must have the maps you need. You will need at least 2 maps. For instance, for the Ohio example, you will need the Premier USA Political version and the Premier USA Terrain version. Plus, the maps need to be matching styles: cut-out or framed or fit together.

  • Open the map from which you will get the feature you need. Be sure you select the option "Paste Remembers Layers." You can check this option from the pop-up menu on the Layers Palette (small black triangle in upper right of palette), or from the General Preferences dialog box.

  • Select the feature you want to move and choose menu option Edit>Copy.

  • Open the map you are moving the feature into and choose menu option Edit>Paste in Front. Your feature is pasted into the proper alignment on the map.
