Map Resources FAQs

Question:

I am opening the a map with Adobe Illustrator CS and I get a message about "legacy text." What does that mean?

Answer:

Legacy text is text created in Illustrator previous to Illustrator CS.

Adobe Illustrator CS introduced a new text engine that provides new functions such as character/paragraph styles and other advanced layout features. However, this new text engine is no longer backwards compatible with previous versions of Illustrator. Illustrator CS will see text from previous version of Illustrator as "legacy text." Illustrator CS must update this text in order to have it be editable.

Map Resources delivers our Illustrator format maps as Illustrator 8 format, which allows them to be opened by earlier Illustrator versions as well as applications like Macromedia FreeHand.

You can use these map files in Adobe Illustrator CS, but you will need to update the text in the map in order to make it editable. When opening one of our maps, Illustrator CS will prompt you choose whether or not you wish to update the document's text. Click the 'Update' button to convert the map's text so that it will be editable with CS.

Now that your map is updated to work with Illustrator CS, you should immediately use the Save As command to make an Illustrator CS version of the map file. Do not use the standard 'Save' command, as this will try to save back in the older format and will break the updated text. Choose menu option File > Save As to create a new file. This is the file you will use from now on with Illustrator CS.
