Map Resources FAQs

Question:

How do I make blue and white maps like the icons on your website?

Answer:

1) Open map file in Adobe Illustrator and turn off all layers except:
    a. Frame
    b. Lat/Long Grid
    c. "Area" Polygons & Boundary Lines.

(For example, on a continent map you'd leave on International Borders & Country Polygons. On a state map you would leave on State Borders & Polygons, or possibly the County Borders & Polygons if you want those defined.)

2) Select the contents of the Lat/Long Grid layer and apply a Blue color of your liking as the Stroke attribute (with no Fill.)

3) Select the contents of the Frame layer and choose the same Blue color for the Stroke attribute (with no Fill.)

4) Select the contents of the "Area" Polygons layer and choose the same Blue color for the Fill attribute (with no stroke or using the same Blue.) If your map shows a target area with surrounding areas (for example, a map of a "landlocked" country), you will need to directly select the target area polygon and then the surrounding areas so that they can be colored differently (to create an offset color scheme.)

Select the contents of the "Area" Boundary Lines layer. If the Stroke attribute has a Dash pattern applied, change this to a solid line and then apply White to the Stroke attribute. Stroke weight needs will vary based on the size at which the map will be used. This step can be omitted if you want just the land area shape, without internal boundaries.
