Map Resources FAQs

Question:

I have clicked the "Download Map" link on my receipt and my browser is trying to save an "asp" file. I thought the maps were delivered as "zip". What's going on?

Answer:

An "asp" file is an Active Server Page document. This is the file format Map Resources uses to create our website. In this instance, the asp document contains the code our website uses for delivering your map zip archive. You should choose to save the file. Your web browser will download the zip archive data.

In most instances, after choosing to save the file your browser will apply the proper filename to the downloaded file. However, some browsers may save the zip file under an incorrect filename such as "fulfillment.asp". This is the zip file but it has been assigned an incorrect filename by the browser. If you change the file extension from "asp" to "zip", the file will open properly with your system's decompression software (such as StuffIt Expander.) This will then extract the map Illustrator file.

More Info:

The "Download Now" link on your receipt page points to an "asp" document. This asp (Active Server Page) document contains programming that matches your order to the proper map file and triggers the download of the appropriate archive. This system provides the immediate download access for our customers, but also allows us to have our product files stored outside of our publicly accessible website (to better secure our intellectual property.) You can think of this "asp" file as the gatekeeper between our customers and our products.

Most browsers correctly interact with this "asp" file as the delivery mechanism for our website. But some browsers do not properly interpret the filename of the delivered zip archive. The downloaded file is the map zip archive; it has just been saved with an incorrect file name. Changing the file extension to ".zip" will associate the file to your decompression software and the file will function as intended.
