Question:
I'm using a Mac and when I unzip my map, I just get a text document or a file with a generic icon. What's going on? Answer: We use the .zip format to deliver our files because it allows cross platform delivery of the maps in a compressed state for faster download times. While the zip compression maintains the integrity of the file data, it unfortunately does not maintain the Macintosh resources fork of the file which makes the association to a specific application. Therefore, when the map file is extracted from a zip archive on the Mac, it has lost the application association and defaults to writing the data as a plain text document. Under Mac OS X, this may cause the unzipped map file to have a generic file icon. Under Mac OS 9 and previous versions, your unzipped map file may appear as a text document (it sometimes gets designated as a SimpleText file.) The map file is still usable in this form. Simply launch the application you wish to use and choose menu option File > Open. Select the text document of the map file and it will open properly. You can now re-save the file and the Macintosh resource fork will be re-established.
