Question:
The map I downloaded is "zipped" (it has a .zip extension). What is a .zip file? Answer: ".zip" is a file format that compresses data into an archive. Since the compressed archive is a smaller file, it makes it faster to download from the internet (as well as saving disk space). Also, some of our maps are comprised of more than one document, so the .zip format allows us to deliver these as one compressed file. Since we deliver our maps in this format, you will need to extract the map graphic from the .zip archive in order to work with it. This is done with decompression software such as WinZip or StuffIt Expander. Your browser may be configured to automatically unzip files with your decompression software when they are downloaded - but if not, you will need to manually extract the map file. Windows - Once the .zip archive is downloaded, you will need to use an application like WinZip or StuffIt Expander to extract the map file. - WinZip: Launch WinZip. Choose menu option File > Open Archive. You will see a standard Windows Open dialog box where you can navigate to the directory where you downloaded the .zip file. Select the downloaded zip archive and click "Open". Now choose menu option Actions > Extract. Choose a destination on your hard drive for the extracted map file and click "Extract". You can now quit WinZip and you will find the map file in the location you selected. - StuffIt Expander: Launch StuffIt Expander for Windows. Choose menu option File > Expand. You will see a standard Windows dialog box where you can navigate to the directory where you downloaded the .zip file. Select the downloaded .zip archive and click "OK". This will automatically extract the contents into the same directory as the .zip archive. Macintosh - Once the .zip archive is downloaded, you will need to use StuffIt Expander (version 5 or better) to extract the map file. You can any of the following methods: - Launch StuffIt Expander and choose menu option File > Expand. You will see a standard Macintosh dialog box where you can locate and select the downloaded zip archive and click "Expand". This will extract the map file into the same location on your hard drive as the downloaded zip archive. - Locate the downloaded zip archive and drag it to the StuffIt Expander icon. This will extract the map file into the same location on your hard drive as the downloaded zip archive. If you do not have a utility to un-ZIP the download files, you can obtain one through the following websites: Windows: WinZip - http://www.winzip.com/ (evaluation version) StuffIt Expander - http://www.stuffit.com/ (free utility) Macintosh: StuffIt Expander - http://www.stuffit.com/ (free utility) A note to Macintosh Users: please read our FAQ about Zip format on the Macintosh.
